GHAZIABAD: Six members of a gang, who used to trick women into parting with their gold ornaments, was nabbed on Tuesday.The police recovered gold ornaments worth nearly Rs 20 lakh from their possession.All members are in their mid-20s and were led by Baris-ud-din, who has been jailed in the past in cases of fraud and cheating, police said. Police added that Baris-ud-din ran the racket with the help of a confidante, Dilshad, who has also been arrested in the past.“The gang used a standard modus operandi through which they used to dupe women by posing as soothsayers, jewellers or astrologers. At times, they also used to pose as crime branch sleuths. The gang members would entice women into surrendering their gold ornaments on various pretexts. As soothsayers, they would say the gold would double in quantity, and as cops, they would say it’ll be taken for quality check,” said SSP Vaibhav Krishna.Police said the gang confessed to have committed around 36 such frauds so far, out of which six were in Ghaziabad. The gang was active in various areas of western UP, including Meerut, Bulandshahr, Hapur and Baghpat.
