Don’t dump waste in drains, NGT tells GMC

GHAZIABAD: The National Green Tribunal has directed the district magistrate and the municipal commissioner, Ghazibad, to draw an action plan to ensure that sewer water and solid waste do not get mixed with storm water drain in Kaushambi township. The tribunal also asked all municipalities in the state to ensure the same. The NGT order has come on a plea filed by Kaushambi Apartments Welfare Association last year.“The 5.5 kilometre storm water drain in Kaushambi township was constructed to provide an outlet to the excess rain water. However, off late, it is being used by theGMC to dump untreated sewer water into it,” said Vinay Mittal, president, KARWA. “It was in July last year that I made repeated complaints to GMC and even the administration but to no avail. So in September I filed a case in the NGT. On August 1, the green panel delivered a landmark verdict not only for Kaushambi township but also for all municipalities in the state,” said Mittal.“The NGT has also ordered formation of a committee under the supervision of UP Pollution Control Board which will look into this issue all over the state,” said Mittal. The case has been disposed of but the tribunal has asked UPPCB to file a status report by January next year.The GMC, meanwhile, has said that they are yet to receive a copy of the NGT order. “Once we receive the copy of the NGT order, we will ensure that it is followed in totality,” said a GMC official.
