Court seeks status report in Audi hit-and-run probe

The court has asked the police to file the report by January 10.” GHAZIABAD: In the Audi hit-and-run case in Ghaziabad which left four persons dead in January 2017, the prosecution counsel on Saturday urged the court to direct the crime branch to file its progress report in the re-investigation being conducted by them. Notably, Qadri, the alleged impersonator, was granted bail on November 13, 2018. The investigating officer had filed the application in the court after Manish Rawat, the main accused in the case, had approached SP (crime) citing lapses on the part of policemen involved in the investigation.

GHAZIABAD: In the Audi hit-and-run case in Ghaziabad which left four persons dead in January 2017, the prosecution counsel on Saturday urged the court to direct the crime branch to file its progress report in the re-investigation being conducted by them. The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Vikas Srivastava then directed the police to file the report by January 10, the next date of hearing.Though the crime branch had filed the chargesheet in the hit-and-run case in November 2017, it submitted another application in the court on December 11, 2018, informing it of new facts emerging in the case. It also stated that another investigation was being conducted on the orders of SP (crime) Prakash Kumar.On the night of January 28, 2017, an Audi Q7, owned by neurosurgeon Dr Manish Rawat, had collided with an auto-rickshaw head-on near the Hindon canal in Indirapuram, killing four passengers in the three-wheeler. Two days later on January 30, Syed Imtiaz Qadri had turned up in court, identifying himself as Ishaq Ahmad — his neighbour in his village in Bareilly district — and claiming to be at the wheel of the Audi on the day of the accident. He had secured bail the next day.Police investigation had later revealed that the original Ishaq was unaware of the accident and Qadri had used a copy of his driving licence to appear in court. The investigating officer had filed the application in the court after Manish Rawat, the main accused in the case, had approached SP (crime) citing lapses on the part of policemen involved in the investigation. Notably, Qadri, the alleged impersonator, was granted bail on November 13, 2018. However, he is still lodged in Dasna jail as he has not been able to produce the bail bond.Rawat made Qadri’s bail application his basis for seeking a further probe in the case under Section 173 (8) of CrPC. Prosecution counsel Mustkeem Ahmad said, “No new report has been filed by the crime branch so far. We want to examine it and file our reply. The court has asked the police to file the report by January 10.”
