GURUGRAM: The Manesar Industries Welfare Association (MIWA) has written to NHAI, alleging that over a month and a half since construction of U-turns at Hero Honda Chowk was announced, nothing has transpired on the ground. In response, NHAI said the time was used up in getting necessary approvals, with the contractor of the project adding that the U-turns will be built within the next 10 days.In May this year, NHAI, expressway concessionaire Millennium City Expressway Private Limited (MCEPL), Kherki Daula toll plaza operator Skylark and traffic police met to discuss key issues in the city. At the meeting, they decided that two U-turns were essential for improving the city’s traffic situation, and to decongest traffic at Kherki Daula toll plaza. MIWA general secretary Suman Chawla said in his letter to NHAI, he has asked “why, despite your [NHAI’s] assurance at the meeting, when the decision was taken, things have not moved.”Trucks that find it difficult to take a U-turn at Hero Honda Chowk tend to move towards Sector 10, which chokes the entire stretch. “At the meeting, it was decided that within 10 days, NHAI will open a cut ahead of Hero Honda Chowk flyover, for trucks to take a U-turn both from the Jaipur-Delhi side towards the Delhi-Jaipur side, and vice-versa. A road will be built so that big trucks with taller height can pass, but nothing has happened on this front since then,” said Manmohan Gaind, vice-president, MIWA.NHAI officials said, “We took this time to get all the approvals. The contractor has now been given a go ahead.” The spokesperson of Valecha, the contractor for the Hero Honda Chowk project, said, “The U-turns will be built in the next 10 days. Our project involved building the flyover and the underpass, which are done. But since the U-turns are a public convenience, we’ll do this work too.”MCEPL CEO S Raghuraman said: “The two U-turns at Hero Honda Chowk are essential to improve traffic movement at Kherki Daula. In their absence, commuters, mostly oversized trucks, have to travel all the way to Kherki Daula to take a U-turn, which creates massive jams at the toll plaza.” MCEPL officials said once the U-turns at Hero Honda Chowk are opened, the temporary U-turn at Kherki Daula can be closed.
