Will have to travel 7.5 km extra if U-turn near toll shut: Commuters

“Cars, buses and trucks cross the road at the toll plaza and come on the wrong side to take the service lane. Speaking to TOI, S Raghuraman, CEO of MCEPL, said: “The U-turn at Kherki-Daula has to be closed soon as it will end the chaos at the toll plaza. Though the service lane is intended for one-way traffic, it is being used from both directions. Commuters cannot use the service road to reach SPR. This results in traffic jams and accidents,” added Avinash Raina, another commuter. The Narsinghpur service lane had been closed last week for repairs, which was one of the major reasons for a six-hour jam at the toll plaza last Tuesday.

GURUGRAM: Commuters headed towards Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) via Kherki Daula toll plaza have opposed the proposed closure of the U-turn a little ahead of the toll plaza.According to expressway concessionaire Millennium City Expressway Private Limited (MCEPL), commuters from the Manesar side wrongly take the U-turn to enter the Narsinghpur service road and reach SPR.Those coming from the Delhi/Gurgaon side also take the U-turn to head back to the city. As a result, traffic from opposite directions clash at the U-turn, leading to chaos and delays.MCEPL wrote to NHAI last week seeking the closure of the U-turn, as the highway authority is already in the process of making two U-turns at the Hero Honda Chowk flyover to ease traffic movement at Kherki Daula.Commuters have admitted that they drive on the wrong side, but said they would have to travel an additional 7.5km to go to Hero Honda Chowk to head towards SPR if the Kherki Daula U-turn is closed. At present, they take the U-turn at Kherki Daula and drive on the wrong side on the service lane for about 1km to reach SPR.“It will be a big discomfort for residents of sectors 80, 82 and 83 if the U-turn is closed. Most school buses also take this route. Otherwise, we have to unnecessarily go up to Hero Honda Chowk, where traffic jams are very common,” said Santosh Sharan, a resident of Sector 80, who regularly uses the stretch.Driving on the wrong side on the one-way Narsinghpur service lane has often caused accidents, but it hasn’t deterred commuters from breaking the rules. “Cars, buses and trucks cross the road at the toll plaza and come on the wrong side to take the service lane.
