On Monday morning, seven men conned two elderly women of their gold chains and bangles and replaced them with fake ornaments before fleeing, according to police The criminals, according to police, first alert women about the menace of burglary in the area and persuade them to put jewellery in polythene bags handed out to them, claiming that it would be safe in these bags. However, while conversing with the women, the conmen manage to hoodwink them and change the polythene bag.A resident of Saraswati Vihar in Chakkarpur, Jaya Laxmi (52), was returning home around 7am on Monday when she was approached by two men on a scooty on the service road of MG Road. The duo showed her their fake police identity cards and urged her not to wear jewellery in public places, citing recurring robberies in the area. Police said two other men were also with the duo.“The criminals then gave me a polythene bag and asked me to keep my gold chain and bangles in it. I kept my ornaments in the bag. However, when I reached home, I was shocked to find bogus ornaments along with some paper pieces in the bag. The conmen had replaced the real jewellery items with fake ones. Upon realising that I was cheated, I called up police,” she alleged. Laxmi claimed that the value of her jewellery was around Rs 2 lakh.In the past, a group of burglars, popularly known as Irani gang, used to target people who went for a stroll in early mornings and late evenings when there would be very few pedestrians on roads.Based on the complaint of Laxmi, an FIR was registered against four men under sections 379 (theft), 420 (cheating) of IPC at Sector 29 police station.“So far, we haven’t got any leads in the case. We are examining the CCTV footage from the area in an attempt to identify the accused. They will be arrested soon,” said Rajesh Kumar, who is investigating the case.Similarly, a 63-year-old resident of Surya Society in Sector 43, Kiran Mishra, was returning home around 7.30am after buying milk from a grocery shop in Sushant Lok area when three men on a bike approached her, claiming that they are cops “One of them gave me a polythene bag and asked me to keep my jewellery in it. They claimed snatchers are on prowl in the area. I kept my gold chain in the bag and went home. Upon reaching home, I opened the bag only to realise that it had a fake gold chain in it,” Mishra said.Acting on her complaint, police registered an FIR against three men under sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention) of IPC at Sushant Lok police station. “We have registered the case, and are trying to identify the accused with the help of CCTV footage,” said ASI Suresh Kumar, who is investigating the case.
