Discom work snaps piped gas supply to 150 homes

GURUGRAM: The supply of piped natural gas ( PNG ) to 150 homes in Sector 14 was disrupted for nearly eight hours due to digging carried out by the discom working on a ‘smart grid’ project on Thursday. Some residents claimed that there was no supply till Friday afternoon.Haryana City Gas (HCG), which runs PNG services, confirmed that its lines were damaged by DHBVN contractors while digging. An official with HCG said, “The disruption occurred at 6pm on Thursday and continued till 2.30am on Friday but we have fixed the problem. Digging creates sparks and if that somehow comes in contact with gas pipelines, a major fire accident can occur.”However, chief engineer of the smart grid project Sanjeev Chopra said they were using state-of-the-art drilling machines.

So we have to work at night. Regarding reports of disrupting gas lines, our systems are modern. The drilling machines have sensors and will automatically stop on contact with metallic objects, including gas pipelines. If some glitches occur, we make prompt efforts to fix them,” he said.HS Nanda, RWA president, Sector 14, said, “We have been getting complaints that landline connections have died. There has been disruption in electricity supply, too.”
