“They started work on the RoB two years ago and the sewage problem has persisted since then. They also met PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh two months ago and the minister had assured them that their problem would be solved within a week. When we approach the PWD and GMDA officials, they pass the buck,” said Anil Varma, a resident. After months of following up with officials, residents have now given up hope for any action. Many are also worried that they would not be able to use the road in case of any medical emergencies. Residents alleged that PWD had defaulted on laying down the sewage pipelines.

GURUGRAM: Sewage water entered five of the 20 houses in Block C1 of Palam Vihar on Saturday with residents saying that both public works department ( PWD ) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have failed to fix the sewage lines in the area.Residents have been facing this problem for the past two years since the road in front of their houses was dug up for construction of the Bajghera railway overbridge (RoB). TOI had earlier reported that 20 families in the area were literally stranded in their houses, thanks to the utter apathy of the PWD officials who dug up the road.On Saturday, some residents were forced to stay in their houses and others had to roll up their pants and get into the muck to get out. “My daughter had an exam and so I had no option but to take her to school. We had to walk in sewage water to get into our car,” said Ashwani Arora, a resident. With the approach road dug up, cars can’t even reach the doors of houses. On Saturday, when TOI visited the spot, a manhole was overflowing and sewage water was spilling out on the dug-up road, making the area unapproachable. Residents alleged that PWD had defaulted on laying down the sewage pipelines. “They started work on the RoB two years ago and the sewage problem has persisted since then. When we approach the PWD and GMDA officials, they pass the buck,” said Anil Varma, a resident. After months of following up with officials, residents have now given up hope for any action. They also met PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh two months ago and the minister had assured them that their problem would be solved within a week. However, months on, the situation on the ground remains the same. The minister didn’t respond to calls or messages on Saturday. When contacted, GMDA officials said that PWD had not cleaned up the sewage lines under their jurisdiction which was causing the overflow and that they had written about the problem to PWD several times.“Now, the PWD officials are telling us that they will make a motorable road within a month. Our worry is that if they don’t fix the sewage lines and construct the road, this will continue in the coming months,” said Swarna Rajesh, a resident.Residents said that the sewage water entering their houses was a major health hazard and might cause illnesses. Many are also worried that they would not be able to use the road in case of any medical emergencies.
