GURUGRAM: A fraudster hacked the Facebook account of an NRI reportedly working with Google in the US, reached out to one of his friends working at Google office in Gurugram and cheated the friend of Rs 50,000.A resident of Sector 28, Himanshu Batra, who works as a senior official at the Internet giant's city office, claimed that the imposter sent him a message on Facebook, seeking monetary help for an emergency at home. Unsuspecting, Batra transferred Rs 50,000 to an account with Overseas Bank's branch in Gurugram. Batra had recently returned to India and joined Google after working in the USA for a few years.Around 1pm on Wednesday (October 17), he received a message on Facebook from the account of Achintya Singhal, who, Batra claimed, currently works at Google in the USA. "The message states that he (Singhal) is in India for a family emergency and needs some money in his account. The message also carries a bank account number (with Overseas Bank), along with the IFSC code. To help him, I transferred Rs 50,000 to his account," Batra wrote in his complaint to police.He then tried to contact Singhal to inform him that the money had been transferred but found his messenger box blocked. Batra then called Singhal, who told him that he had never sent him any message asking for money. "It turned out that Singhal's Facebook account had been hacked. Also, the bank account does not belong to my friend. Please freeze the bank account, to which the money has been transferred," Batra further wrote in the complaint.Based on his complaint, an FIR has been registered under sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC and section 66-D of Information Technology (IT) Act at the cybercrime police station."We are investigating the matter and the accused will be arrested soon," said inspector Shamsuddin, the investigating officer.
