Ambala civic body cancels contracts of garbage collection contractors

AMBALA: The Ambala Municipal Corporation Commissioner Jaibir Singh Arya has cancelled the contracts of the door-to-door garbage collection contractors after the officials found their functioning as negligent. Now we have started hiring more number of vehicles to collect the garbage and the service has been resumed. The residents of Ambala City and Cantonment are facing huge inconveniences as the sanitation workers had suspended the door-to-door garbage collection services from last one month seeking the pending payments from last four months. The payments of the workers are the liabilities of the contractors as they failed to provide services as per the rules and norms of the tender. "The officials have constituted a committee and new conditions for the tenders have also been decided.

The residents of Ambala City and Cantonment are facing huge inconveniences as the sanitation workers had suspended the door-to-door garbage collection services from last one month seeking the pending payments from last four months. The MC had halted the payments of the contractors from last three months after it found their work to negligent and also violating the norms of the tender.MC Joint Commissioner, Satinder Siwatch said, "Despite giving enough time, the contractors failed to resume the work, therefore we had to cancel their contracts as the residents were facing inconveniences at large. Now we have started hiring more number of vehicles to collect the garbage and the service has been resumed. The payments of the workers are the liabilities of the contractors as they failed to provide services as per the rules and norms of the tender."The officials have constituted a committee and new conditions for the tenders have also been decided. On Friday, the MC may advertise a new tender on short-term notice and it will be opened post-Diwali.The new committee is led by Joint Commissioner and there are two municipal engineers , three sanitary inspectors, one chief sanitary inspector and a senior accountant. The committee has submitted its final report to the commissioner and now, according to the new terms and conditions of this committee, the new tender will be allotted.The civic officials had given four notices to the contractors, despite that they failed to provide any satisfactory replies and therefore, it has halted the payment of Rs 7 crore as per the rules.The past contractors had failed to resume efficient services, therefore their contracts are cancelled, said Commissioner Jaibir Singh Arya adding that they are free to appeal further.
