Gender test racket busted in Ratia, 10 nabbed (w/pic)

Hisar: The Fatehabad health department busted an inter-state illegal sex determination test (SDT) racket in Ratia town on Sunday night. He said Ahmedgarh police had already registered a case against Malkit on March 15, but he started operating in Fatehabad afterwards. After that the nurse took the decoy near Ghaggar river in a car and from there she took her in another car for the gender test sex, he said.The health department team nabbed all accused from the spot and handed them over to police. The team also seized a portable ultrasound machine, other items and impounded two cars used in the crime.Besides, the team seized Rs 15,500 from Malkit and Rs 47,000 from Mithu possession, Dr Bansal said. She demanded Rs 30,000 for sex determination and told the team to bring the pregnant woman on Sunday evening,” he said.The civil surgeon said the health departmental team took a decoy pregnant woman Jasvir Kaur, a resident of Dhani Jakhandadi of Tohana, to the spot as told by the nurse.

Ten persons, including a nurse of a private hospital and two couples, were arrested.Those running the racket used to charge Rs 30,000 to conduct each test to identify the gender of a foetus using a portable ultrasound machine.Inspector Bimla Devi, in-charge, Fatehabad women police station, who was also a member of the raiding party, said Ratia police registered a case against Malkit Singh of Ahmedgarh village of Sangrur in Punjab; Kirpal Singh of Mallke village in Mansa, Punjab; Mithu Singh of Mansa; Kulwinder Singh of Barnala in Punjab; Balbir, Sarojbala and her husband Sanjay, both residents of Dhani Isahar of Fatehabad; and a nurse Manjeet Kaur, under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act and for cheating and criminal conspiracy under IPC.In the complaint given to the police, district civil surgeon Dr Manish Bansal said he got a tip-off about the inter-state sex determination racket, following which he constituted a team of Dr Sangeeta, a nodal officer of PNDT Act of Fatehabad; Dr Girish Kumar, additional senior medical officer; and Dr Kamal Beniwal, medical officer.“The team members disguised as customers contacted Guru Ramdas Hospital’s nurse Manjeet, who is also the member of this racket.
