GURUGRAM: There are no cat’s eye ( solar ) reflectors on the entire stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. With foggy conditions set to get worse this winter, city traffic police have now asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to look into gaps and put up reflectors, wherever possible.Besides, traffic police have also asked highway officials to install reflector tapes on jersey barriers at Sirhaul border. This year, 13 people have lost their lives on the expressway. With visibility levels bound to be poor this winter too, ACP Hira Singh said, “We have asked NHAI to install cat’s eye reflectors on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway. We have also requested for arrow marks and white lines wherever there are turns. Glow signboards and solar traffic blinkers will be installed to help commuters in the night.”At present, said traffic cops, the deployment on the expressway would not be increased.Gurpreet Singh, road safety associate, a part of the Haryana Vision Zero, said, “The cat’s eye reflectors are important for commuters to know where the road is going. It is the best guide during foggy seasons. Actually, the cat’s eye reflectors should have been installed a long time ago by NHAI.”The expressway operator said that it was not easy to get the cat’s eye installed during winter.Colonel Subhash Yadav, general manager, Skylark, said, “It will not be easy to install cat’s eye reflectors right now. A proposal has to be placed and tenders have to be floated. Additionally, a cat’s eye has to be installed every two metres on the expressway. So, this is a lengthy process and might not get done immediately.”TOI has learnt that when the expressway was constructed in 2008, the concessionaire of that time — Delhi-Gurugram Super Connectivity Ltd (DGSCL) — had installed some cat’s eye reflectors. However, those are nowhere to be found today. NHAI officials said, “We will do all that can be done to help commuters during winter.”
