ROHTAK: Of the five municipal corporations, Rohtak MC election seems to have become the most prestigious one for the ruling and opposition political parties. For BJP nominee Manmohan Goyal , several cabinet rank ministers are making rounds to woo voters, while former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his MP son Deepender Singh Hooda are putting their weight behind Congress supported candidate Sitaram Sachdeva. In the past one week, the father-son duo has held two press conferences and have attached their loyalists — Shadi Lal Batra and BB Batra — with Sachdeva. On the other had, the INLD has a parachute candidate, Sanchit Nandal, for the mayor’s post. Sanchit is son of party’s district president Satish. Sanchit, who is director of a construction company, did his masters from Birmingham University, UK. The fourth candidate in the poll fray is social activist Jagmati Sangwan, who is the CPM candidate and is known to take on khaps on social issues. Unlike others, who are spending huge amounts on advertisements, Jagmati is contacting voters with door-to-door campaigning. She might be short on resources against political heavyweights, but has the assurance of support from committed voters from underprivileged class. As far as the poll issues are concerned, providing drinking water and electricity in all colonies remain the most important one in the mayoral election. Due to a number of chain snatching incidents in the township, issues of safety of women and children will also be raked by residents when candidates come asking for votes. Besides, growing traffic congestion due to unregulated parking and encroachments is another issue which is emerging. The CPM candidate, however, has also pointed towards heavy bureaucracy in the municipal corporation, due to which the poor were not being entertained and it was time to end this. Stress is also being laid on installation of CCTV cameras to curb crime against women.
