CHANDIGARH: Overwhelmed by the special CBI court’s verdict , convicting self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and three others for the murder of his father Ram Chander Chhatarapati in 2002, Anshul Chhatarpati on Friday claimed the special CBI judge, Jagdeep Singh, was “an incarnation of God”, who came on the earth to give justice to the family.Anshul, who was present in the courtroom when the verdict was annouced, said his family would worship him for giving them justice after such a prolong and frustrating legal battle against the “mighty” dera chief. Special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh, however, brushed it aside, saying, “I have only played my role as a judicial officer”.After coming out of the courtroom, Anshul spoke to TOI about the hard times faced by the family for standing against the Sirsa dera chief.What kind of pressure did you face from the dera?They never approached us directly, but indirectly they tried to convey the message that we stop pursuing the matter. We were conveyed many times that “pahle hi nuksaan ho chuka hai, ab aage na ho. Samay or paisa sab jakham bhar dete hain (Much has been lost already, it should not happen again. Time and money heal all wounds). We never thought of compromising because any compromise with them would have been an insult to the sacrifice made by my father for truth.Have you got any support from the state government?We never got any kind of support from any political head or the ruling party in the state. The then chief minister, Om Prakash Chautala, had twice visited the hospital where my father was admitted after he was shot in October 2002 and after his death. He assured to provide all kind of help to the family. Even an announcement to bear the cost of treatment of my father and a job to one member of the family was made on his behalf. Strangely, nothing was done by anyone. We had borne all the medical expenses incurred during my father’s treatment. No job was provided to any member of our family.How do you see the role of Haryana Police in this case as you had to move the court for CBI probe?I would say the Haryana Police is very much capable of solving any case. And in this case also, it was three brave constables---Karam Chand Jakhar, Amarpal and Jag Mahender — who courageously arrested both the shooters involved in the killing of my father. I had to approach the court for CBI probe after I realised pressure on the state police from political leaders for excluding the dera head’s name from the case. I knew that the dera chief was extremely powerful and the Haryana Police would succumb to his pressure.Who do you believe helped you to get justice — CBI or courts?Initially, the Haryana Police, which arrested the shooters. And after that the CBI, which fearlessly probed the case and booked the dera chief for his involvement in the killing of my father. The judicial system also came in our rescue whenever we started losing hope against the ‘mighty’ accused. It was the judiciary only, which ordered an independent probe in the case.Who do you hold responsible for over 16 years of delay in getting justice?I would only say that it was the accused who had filed multiple petitions and applications in various courts of the country, just to delay the trial of the case.
