Religare said they have received calls from persons impersonating as policy holders or their relatives to get essential policy details. GURUGRAM: A few conmen, posing as representatives of an insurance company, call up unsuspecting policy holders of same company and inform them that the terms and conditions of their policies have been changed and premiums increased. The “representatives” also tell them that they won’t be able to claim the entire insurance amount due to the changes. A few days later, a call centre calls them up again, this time posing as agents from another insurance company, and offers to port their policies to the latter company in lieu of better benefits. This fraud has come to light after Religare Health Insurance Company Ltd, which has an office on Golf Course Road, filed a complaint with the cyber crime police station regarding calls by unidentified persons to retrieve information on policies offered by the company and later illegally soliciting customers. “The callers have already obtained personal information of policy holders, which enables them to answer the verification questions and get information from us,” a representative of the company said.Over such 200 calls were received by their customer care centres, the company said in its complaint, alleging that data of its policy holders was illegally obtained by some unidentified persons. “This raises suspicions about malpractices by other insurance companies against our company,” it stated.“An FIR was filed under Section 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the IT Act and sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 419 (cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC,” inspector Manoj Kumar of cyber crime police station said.
