The idea is that if Gabbar and Kaalia can leave their villainy to impart road safety gyan, you should be more careful about such basic stuff too. “They keep saying it’s Sambha but the get-up is totally Kaalia so we changed our act a bit to make it more Gabbar and Kaalia. Initially, the organisers had promoted the activity as traffic lessons from Gabbar and Sambha but managed to acquire the get-up of Gabbar and his other henchman Kaalia. Gabbar and Kaalia would zero in on the defaulters at the red light across the metro station, with Gabbar mixing traffic gyan with modified versions of some of his most iconic lines. The RSOs would then tell the defaulters what they were doing wrong and the commuters would only be let go after promising their ‘sardar’ Gabbar Singh that they would never break traffic rules again.

On Wednesday afternoon, when Gurgaon resident Ankit’s two-wheeler was stopped near HUDA City Centre since he was not wearing a helmet, it wasn’t a traffic cop blocking his path but an iconic movie villain. Instead of the usual demand for ‘license and registration’, what Ankit heard was, “Jab 50-50 kos door tak koi traffic rule todta hai, toh wahan Gabbar aa jata hai!” Gabbar Singh and his trusty sidekick Kaalia took to the streets on Wednesday afternoon to educate commuters about the importance of road safety as part of an initiative by the Gurugram Traffic Police and Road Safety Organisation. The two theatre actors from Delhi dressed up as the iconic villains from ' Sholay ', and helped the police and RSOs (road safety officers) maintain traffic at three different locations in the city. The exercise began at HUDA City Centre where the cops and the two new ambassadors focussed on helmetless two-wheeler riders and cars that failed to stop before the zebra crossing. ACP (Law and Order) Jai Singh, who supervised the drive, said, “It is important to improvise and get the message of road safety across to people in a new way every time. We hope the curiosity shown by people when they saw Gabbar and Kaalia here transforms to actual results and they take home the message with them and act on it.”Deepak Bajaj as Gabbar and Nitin Singh as Kaalia talk to traffic defaultersGabbar and Kaalia (more on his identity crisis later) were played by two theatre actors and students from Apeejay School of Management, Dwarka – Deepak Bajaj and Nitin Singh. Initially, the organisers had promoted the activity as traffic lessons from Gabbar and Sambha but managed to acquire the get-up of Gabbar and his other henchman Kaalia. “They keep saying it’s Sambha but the get-up is totally Kaalia so we changed our act a bit to make it more Gabbar and Kaalia. It is fun. A lot of people are coming up to us and asking what we are doing and I think the message is getting across,” said Nitin. At Bristol Chowk, the blockbuster turned into a comedy of errors as the defaulters refused to stop for Gabbar and his henchman. As the two baddies stopped (or rather attempted to stop) several vehicles who were flouting the rules, exasperated drivers simply responded with, “Please aaj galti ho gayi but abhi time nahi hai. Please jaane do!” before driving off. “This is the state here. People don’t want to even stop when they have done something wrong,” said an RSO at the location. Eventually, Gabbar and Kaalia managed to help the cops catch some defaulters including a car driving with tinted windows, before moving on to impart some gyan at the final location – MG Road. Deepak, who played Gabbar, told us, “Initially, we were completely in character and one elderly gentleman actually got scared so we had to tone down the aggression a bit. The idea is that if Gabbar and Kaalia can leave their villainy to impart road safety gyan, you should be more careful about such basic stuff too. I hope people will remember this.”
