GURUGRAM: If you do not plant a tree on the premises of your home, MCG might not give you the occupation certificate. In a bid to increase the city’s green cover, the corporation is on its way to make it mandatory for property owners constructing new houses to plant a tree before they get their occupation certificate (OC).While a resolution in this regard was passed during a House meeting last year, it has recently been sent to Chandigarh for final approval. This would require a change in by-laws. According to MCG officials, the idea behind the clause is to ensure sufficient green cover in the city.“All those constructing buildings will have to plant a sapling right after getting their building plan sanctioned. They will have to submit the photographs of the tree while applying for the occupation certificate. If we do not find a tree at the time of OC application, it will not be issued,” said YS Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, MCG. He added that since houses under construction also approach the corporation for disposal of construction waste and other purposes, MCG will have ample chances to monitor tree plantation as well as its maintenance. The trees being planted will help MCG increase the city’s green cover and help tackle the dust and pollution. Sources said that the matter was also discussed at length a meeting conducted under EPCA chairman Bhure Lal in December. The city currently has a green cover of 7 sqm per person, as per a report by GMDA. MCG is working on a number of different projects to increase green cover in the city. Last year, the city administration was also asked by the NGT to prepare a plan in the same regard. The plan was later reduced to the makeover of five city roads.
