Unfortunately, the forest department doesn’t carry out any checking on ground to verify why trees need to be cut. Nevertheless, the residents erect several gates by cutting trees. This has become a major threat to our efforts in safeguarding the trees in our area,” said R S Rathee, president of the DLF Qutub Enclave Residents’ Welfare Association.Talking about the decreasing green cover in DLF 1, Anita, a resident, said, “This area was once known for its green cover. Most lanes were named after the trees that were planted here. However, now the area is losing its sheen. It is because of the demand of more space for parking. Most residents don’t even seek permission to fell trees and there is no vigilance by the authorities.”“If we have numbers on all the trees, it will be easier to find out how many trees have been cut. It will also help in taking action against those who are mindlessly cutting trees close to their properties,” Rathee added.
