Botched-up cataract surgery: New surgeries for 19 patients in Rohtak PGI

ROHTAK: A day after 38 elderly patients were admitted in PGIMS, Rohtak , with post-cataract operation complications, 19 underwent fresh surgeries on Thursday.Speaking to TOI later in the day, PGIMS director Rohtash Yadav said, “The doctors wanted to ensure that the infection does not spread to other parts of the body.’’ On a cautious note, he added, that even though some of the patients had been operated upon, there was still no assurance that their vision would be restored. He said that most of the patients with complications were from the government hospital in Bhiwani A status report has already been sent to the state health department, informing them about the botched-up surgeries and the follow up action at Rohtak hospital, he said. According to Yadav, even though the matter is still being investigated, they suspect that the fluids used in cataract surgery may have been contaminated and it led to eye infection.Aamir Khan, who was operated upon at PGIMS, claimed he was feeling “very disheartened” as the doctors there were not giving patients an assurance of their vision being restored. Another patient, Junia Devi echoed similar sentiments. “I am now desperately hoping that the corrective surgery is helpful. But, if our vision is not restored, life would be terrible,” she said.Meanwhile, Bhiwani chief medical officer Aditya Swaroop Gupta said a panel of doctors set up to probe into the matter had collected samples of medicines used for cataract surgeries from the operation theatre. “Till the time the inquiry is going on, the eye department where botched up surgeries took place has been closed down,” he said. He added that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
