Doctor an accidental victim of kidnapping gang on the lookout for ‘soft target’

GURUGRAM: The 27-year-old doctor who was kidnapped on March 16 was an accidental target of Joginder Panchi’s gang busted by STF. “They would identify an isolated person as potential victim,” said Balan, adding the gang did not have any pre-fixed targets, on whom they would do prior recce. He added that the gang’s modus operandi was to look for a ‘soft target’. By midnight, the gang had withdrawn around Rs 40,000 from an ATM on the city outskirts, when they found the victim had more than Rs 3 lakh balance in his account. “Finding so much money, they guessed he is wealthy , and decided to kidnap him for ransom,” said DIG STF Satheesh Balan, adding that’s when they forced the victim to reveal his identity.

The gang of snatchers and looters were unaware while kidnapping him that he was the son of the owner of Pushpanjali Hospital, and were looking for an easy target in Sector 29.The gang spotted the young doctor parking his expensive car in an isolated parking lot near a hotel in Sector 29. They cornered him at gunpoint as he was entering the hotel after calling someone. Some of the gang members took him hostage in his car, while the rest tailed then in another car, as they drove away.Soon they snatched his ATM card and forced him to share its password. By midnight, the gang had withdrawn around Rs 40,000 from an ATM on the city outskirts, when they found the victim had more than Rs 3 lakh balance in his account. “Finding so much money, they guessed he is wealthy , and decided to kidnap him for ransom,” said DIG STF Satheesh Balan, adding that’s when they forced the victim to reveal his identity. When they realised who he was, they drove him to Delhi, from where they made the WhatsApp call to his family to demand ransom.Fearing for his son’s safety, the father paid up the ransom in Panipat on the night of May 17, without approaching police. His son was released. Ten days later, the family mustered the courage to file a police complaint, on the basis of which, an FIR was registered at Civil Lines police station on Monday. In their complaint, the family mentioned they had verbally informed police about the March 16 incident, without filing a formal complaint.“We had formed teams to track the accused, but couldn’t proceed to arrest anyone without a formal complaint and FIR,” said Balan. He added that the gang’s modus operandi was to look for a ‘soft target’. “They would identify an isolated person as potential victim,” said Balan, adding the gang did not have any pre-fixed targets, on whom they would do prior recce.
