Discom workers protest sacking of three colleagues

GURUGRAM: Around 300 workers of All Haryana Power Corporation Workers Union (AHPCWU) protested outside the circle office of Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam ( HVPN ) in Sector 14 for allegedly sacking three of its workers two months ago.These employees were reinstated and then fired again during Diwali, the protesters claimed.Workers said they had raised this issue with the officials in private, but since nothing came of it, they resorted to a sit-in protest on Wednesday.Sanjay Saini, a member of AHPCWU said, "The only mistake the three workers made was that they switched from Haryana State Electricity Board Workers Union (HSEBWU) to AHPCWU."Praveen Kumar, Pratish Kumar and Mukesh Kumar—all from Rewari—were sacked in September and due to following protests, they were reinstated about five days later. Then they were sacked in October again.These workers had been working for three years with the HVPN. "How can officials suddenly remove them?" Sushil Sharma, another protester, said. The protest lasted for around three hours. "None of the officials came to meet us," they said. "Although we know that a state committee has been set up by the HVPN in Rewari on November 24 in this regard."An HVPN official said the workers were sacked for their "non-performance." "HVPN doesn't take random steps. These workers were non-performers and also used foul language against a junior engineer in Rewari following which this action was taken against them," an official said, requesting anonymity. "They aren't formally employed by us. We have just outsourced the work to them. We reserve the right to do this."
