Corporator opens fire during Shivaji Jayanti in Dharwad

Dharwad: A corporator created panic by opening fire during Shivaji Jayanti celebrations here on Monday.Manjunath Kadam, who represents Congress , arrived at Shivali Circle on Saundatti Road along with his supporters and garlanded an idol of Shivaji . Later in the day, police commissioner MN Nagaraj said it has been a tradition in some communities to open fire during Shivaji Jayanti and Vijayadashami. Hence, police have not booked a case, he said.Calls and messages to Kadam’s mobile phone number remained unanswered. Hearing the gunshot, people ran helter-skelter.Police interrogated Kadam and released him as he is a licensed gun holder. Amid chants of ‘Jai Bhavani’ and ‘Jai Shivaji’, another leader, Basavaraj Jadhav, flashed a sword even as policemen were deployed at the site for security.No case has been registered in this regard.Many corporators and politicians were present at the spot.
