Silver worth Rs 58 lakh seized from robbers

DAVANAGERE: A special team from Davanagere Rural police station , led by DSP Manjunatha K Gangal, has busted a highway robbery case by arresting eight inter-state robbers . After attacking him at 3.30am under Davanagere Rural police station limits, they allegedly robbed him of 300kg of silver billets at knife-point. About 240kg of silver billets worth Rs 58 lakh, a revolver with five bullets, lethal weapons like knives, two cars worth Rs 30 lakh have been recovered from them.Addressing reporters here on Saturday, SP Chethan R said that the eight-member gang had on December 29 allegedly attacked Jagannath Khandekar, jeweller from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, at Hunasakatte village on NH-4. They had also threatened him with a revolver.The robbery took place when Khandekar was going in his car with his driver Panduranga Mali carrying 300kg of silver billets to Sevapet in Salem district of Tamil Nadu. “The gang, which travelled in two cars, followed the movements of the jeweller right from Kolhapur,” the SP said, adding that after committing the robbery, they took him to Chitrdurga and took away Rs 14,000 and two cellphones.In this connection, Khandekar lodged a complaint at Davanagere Rural police station on December 30, the SP said, and identified the accused as Nisar, 25, from Echalakaranji in Maharashtra, Rahul, 36, of Upari village in Kolhapur district, Nadeem 25, of Echalakaranji, Jakeer Saab, 20, from Upari in Kolhapur, Nagaraj, 46, in Ballari, Shyamsundar, 46, Manohar, 45, from Belaguppa in Kalyanadurga of Ananthapur in Andhra Pradesh, and Udaykumar, 36, from Peddavattur in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
