Dharwad: The BJP was left humiliated on Tuesday with four of its members supporting the no-confidence motion moved by the Congress against Dharwad zilla panchayat president Chaitra Shirur , who represents the saffron party.The 22-member House saw 16 votes in favour of the motion put to vote at a special general body meeting. With BJP members Manjavva Harijan, Annappa Desai, Jyoti Bentur and Ratna Patil supporting the motion, the Congress also succeeded in beating the anti-defection law.The rule cannot be applied on the cross-voting BJP members as more than one-third of the party had violated the whip.While the BJP has 10 members in the House, the Congress has 11. Shivanand Karigar, an independent member, also supported the motion. Karigar, who became the vice-president after aligning with the BJP, said he would now support the Congress, adding that he was confident of retaining his position.As the drama unfolded, Chaitra was left to fend for herself as no senior BJP leader came to her rescue. She later alleged that the Congress bribed the four BJP members. She also said that the four members betrayed the people of their constituencies by joining hands with Congress.Karigar, however, said that when the election results were out in 2016, no party could get a majority and BJP managed to attain power with his support. “During that time, it was decided that Shirur will be the president for 20 months. However, she refused to resign after 20 months. Other BJP members who were fed up with her adamant behaviour have supported the no-confidence motion,” he said. The BJP said it will seek action against its four members who defied the whip under the provisions of the anti-defection law. ZP CEO Satish said a report on the day’s developments will be submitted to the deputy commissioner.“It is for the DC to decide whether the provisions of the anti-defection law can be evoked against the four BJP members who have supported the no confidence motion ,” Satish said.
