Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation introduced door-to-door garbage collection using auto tippers to make the cities clean and green. However, dumping of garbage and other waste on the roadside is still common in most areas.Before introducing the new system, HDMC remove the garbage containers. But people still dump garbage there without any fear of penalty and gradually, garbage containers have also reappeared.When Radhabai Safare and Dr Pandurang Patil were mayors, they succeeded in removing containers and implementing garbage collection through pushcarts and disposal through tractors. But, though auto tippers have been deployed, people dump garbage by the roadside.Mayor Sudhir Saraf said door-to-door garbage collection has been hampered by lack of adequate auto tippers. Currently, 176 are in use but 20 more are required. “Once all auto tippers and composting stations start working, then garbage dumping on roadsides can be curbed,” he said.In the absence of composting stations, auto tippers now go to Karwar Road garbage yard to dump garbage. If once composting stations start functioning, then garbage collection from doors will become more effective, he added.Shakil Ahmad, commissioner, HDMC, said, “There is a shortage of auto tippers but we’ll meet the requirement in another month. After that, dumping garbage on roadsides can be checked and we can cover all houses.”Laxmikant Desur, resident of Uday Nagar, said garbage disposal is poor in the area. “In the absence of proper collection system, people throw garbage on the roadside and containers have been brought back,” he said.
