Collapsed building: As toll reaches 7, at least 20 still trapped under the rubble

Dharwad: The toll in the building crash here reached seven with the rescue team recovering five more bodies on Wednesday. Regional commissioner Tushar Girinath , who is also the administrator of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.As many as 55 people, including three women, were rescued and shifted to various hospitals in the twin cities. It is suspected that 20-30 people, including 12 girl students, are still trapped under the debris as their relatives were waiting near the spot.The NDRF team , which took over the rescue operation , struggled to reach the girls as they were surrounded by collapsed concrete pillars. The girls responded to calls, but their voices weakened later. Deputy commissioner Deepa Cholan said, “After hearing their voices in the morning, we supplied them glucose and water and stepped up the operation to remove the blocks. However, as the time ticked, there was no response from the girls,” Deepa said.Prakash Kudatarkar, owner of a cyber café in the building, said the girls were at the facility to apply online for jobs in the Regional Rural Bank. Some of the girls were playing online games at the café when the tragedy struck.The deceased were identified as Salim Makandar, 35, Ashit Hiremath, 28, and his father Mahesh Hiremath, 62, Mehboob Raichur, 48, Mehboob Desai, 55, and Aslam Sheikh. Authorities could not identify the seventh deceased.The HDMC has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to those critically injured. It will also offer Rs 5,000 to bereaved families to perform the last rites.A 78-member Natural Disaster Response Force contingent from Ghaziabad reached Dharwad on Tuesday night. They joined the team of 32 from Bengaluru and immediately commenced the rescue operation.Quality checkAfter ordering a magisterial inquiry, Girinath directed the HDMC to seize all the documents pertaining to the building and send the material used for construction for quality check. Additional deputy commissioner Suresh Itnal will conduct the inquiry and submit a report at the earliest, Girinath said. “The government has considered this incident seriously and those involved in the substandard construction will be brought to book,” he said.The HDMC has filed a complaint against the building owner and engineer for faulty building design and using substandard materials.Police filed an FIR under Section 304 of IPC against four owners of the building and an engineer on Tuesday night. Police commissioner M N Nagaraj said a special team will arrest the accused soon.The building is owned by Renukadevi Construction which has four partners — Basavaraj Demappa Nigadi, Gangappa Shivappa Shintri, Mahabaleshwar Shivappa Puradagudi and Ravi Basavaraj Sabarad.
