Hubballi: Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences has decided to control the rush at all the wards including emergency by issuing digital cards to the patient attendees. KIMS Hospital, considered as the lifeline of north Karnataka, often sees heavy rush and chaotic conditions at the emergency ward, trauma centre and in front of the labour unit. At the labour unit, they have managed to contain the crowd by not permitting patient attendees inside the labour room. But the corridor in front of the labour room always remains bustling. If everything goes as per the plan, KIMS will introduce a digital card system. It will be issued to the patient attender at the time of admission, and will contain all the data of the patient. The attendees need to show it to the security personnel every time they enter the hospital. The security guard will scan the card with a bar code reader. If the patient has more than one attendee or a relative, then the first person has to hand it over to the second after meeting the patient. In this system, the security personnel will have details of visitors and can control the rush at the hospital.KIMS director Dr Ramalingappa Antaratani told TOI that the new system would be implemented at the earliest. He said they would study the pros and cons of the system and make the necessary arrangements.Apart from this, they have plans to shift medicine department's ICU and trauma centre to the upper floors so that rush at the ground floor would be contained. He said he had a discussion about this with doctors and security advisor. The decision came following complaints from doctors and post-graduation students that they were unable to work at the emergency and other departments as one patient will be surrounded by many relatives and friends. There were incidents in the past where patients' relatives threatened doctors at the emergency ward. The KIMS has already banned entry of people from front door and were allowing them through other gates.
