more-in Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has announced that the government is working out modalities for filling up vacancies of prosecuting officers in the State’s criminal courts. He said the government secured partial victory in checking crime and more steps are being taken to bring down the crime rate in the State. The Chief Minister intervened in a discussion on a query relating to appointment of prosecuting officers that came up during the Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. He said the crime rate had come down in the State capital following the government’s decision to invoke provisions under the Preventive Detention Act on habitual offenders. Coupled with this was the success in ensuring conviction of several of those held under the PD Act which served as deterrent. The government is conducting total review on the requirement for appointment of public prosecutors and assistant public prosecutors as it is a major step in ensuring that the prosecutions launched by the police result in conviction of the offenders. Home Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy said a meeting was on the cards with senior police officials for formulating an action plan relating to the appointments. The government had sanctioned 311 posts of prosecuting officers of which 83 are vacant at present. Action had been initiated to fill up these posts at the earliest, he added.
