Swami Paripoornananda being placed under house arrest by the Hyderabad police on Monday. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement more-in The Hyderabad city police on Monday placed pontiff Swami Paripoornananda Saraswati under house-arrest at the house of one of his followers in Jubilee Hills. The arrest was made by Jubilee Hills police hours before he was scheduled to take out a rally named Dharmika Chaitanya Yatra from the city to the temple town of Yadadri. The three-day padayatra from Boduppal Shiva temple to Yadadri, while chanting Rama Sankeertanas, was against derogatory comments made by Kathi Mahesh on Lord Rama and Goddess Sita during a debate on a Telugu news channel recently. However, Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh Bhagwat did not grant permission for the yarta, stating that anti-social elements were taking advantage of the situation and posed a threat to the law and order situation in the commissionerate limits. Tension prevailed outside the house of Swami Paripoornananda’s devotee when a man threatened to commit suicide if the police did not lift the house-arrest. The Jubilee Hills police said the man was identified as Rahul Deshpande, who was later taken into custody and a case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC was registered. The cops also detained more than 20 activists of various Hindu outfits. A senior official said that as per the request of the pontiff, he was taken to a temple, and the house arrest would be lifted only if he withdrew his call for the yatra.
