Women leaders resent poor representation on Cong. committees

Congress party’s grand exercise in accommodating people from all sections in the 10 committees announced for the forthcoming Assembly polls has also left several women workers peeved at being neglected. “Congress cannot repeat the mistake of caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao heading the government without a woman Minister,” a woman aspirant from a city constituency said. Mr. Khuntia said party workers would be disappointed for not finding their names in the lists. A senior leader admitted that there was poor representation of women and said they were working out strategies to use their services in multiple ways. Not a single woman is in the core committee, while only two women have found place in the manifesto committee.

Aruna, who has been made the co-chairperson of campaign committee, a majority of women accommodated in various committees are there by the virtue of being ex-MLAs, MLCs or Ministers. Mahila Congress president Nerella Sharada is in the invitees’ list of the poll committee despite being the chief of women’s wing. Women leaders resent that those who have been the most recognisable faces in their respective constituencies or have vociferously defended the party in the media have not been accommodated. Only two women are in the campaign committee, while four figure in the election committee out of 41 workers. Not a single woman is in the core committee, while only two women have found place in the manifesto committee. “Congress cannot repeat the mistake of caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao heading the government without a woman Minister,” a woman aspirant from a city constituency said. “I have been defending the party taking on top speakers of the ruling party after studying the latter’s weaknesses in-depth, but I am annoyed that my services are not recognised,” a woman leader complained to R.C. Khuntia, AICC secretary in-charge. A senior leader admitted that there was poor representation of women and said they were working out strategies to use their services in multiple ways. Mr. Khuntia said party workers would be disappointed for not finding their names in the lists. “But this is just a beginning and we will accommodate the deserving ones in various positions as the election process picks up,” he told The Hindu.
