Tough fight on the cards for Munugode

A senior TRS leader said Congress MLC Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, if given Congress ticket, was likely to pose a challenge to Mr. Prabhakar Reddy. The fact that no disciplinary action was taken against him by the party was a likely indication of his nomination, said the TRS leader. Accountability, coupled with timing, could prove costly for candidates campaigning in the Munugode constituency for the coming Assembly elections. So far, the Congress has won the seat seven times and the CPI six times. Non-payment of compensation to project oustees and lack of infrastructure in villages are other issues the candidates have to answer.

Such simple and direct questions, besides causing embarrassment, are making electioneering a challenge for candidates. A group of villagers at Jai Kesaram of Choutuppal confronted TRS candidate Koosukuntla Prabhakar Reddy with the question, “How many times did you visit our village?” The TRS candidate visited Kuntlagudem of the same mandal on Monday when voters confronted him with similar questions. ‘Unkept promises’ The constituency, with a myriad challenges, and ‘many unkept promises’, as locals put it, witnessed expressions of dissent in the past — in the form of mock funeral of leaders, boycott of rallies and meetings, and an aggrieved oustee attacking a leader with her slipper. Candidates are also facing dissent in fluorosis-affected mandals that have no regular drinking water. Non-payment of compensation to project oustees and lack of infrastructure in villages are other issues the candidates have to answer.
