TDP MLA resigns following SC ruling

The Supreme Court, in the last week, had upheld the High Court ruling and directed the legislator to quit. VIJAYAWADA: The ruling TDP legislator from Madakasira Assembly constituency in Ananthapur, K Eeranna, had resigned to his post on Friday. His election now at the end of the present term of the Assembly will increase the YSR Congress strength in the Assembly to 66. The YSR Congress had won 67 MLAs in the last election. The SC also directed the AP Speaker to recognise Thippe Swamy as MLA from Madakasira Assembly.The YSR Congress candidate Thippe Swamy alleged that the TDP leader had misled the Election Commission by hiding the facts when he filed the nomination and affidavits at the time of 2014 election.

VIJAYAWADA: The ruling TDP legislator from Madakasira Assembly constituency in Ananthapur, K Eeranna, had resigned to his post on Friday. The legislator had submitted his resignation letter to the Assembly secretary at Velagapudi as Speaker Dr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao was unavailable.The resignation of Eeranna was necessitated following the Supreme Court direction, which upheld his disqualification by the Hyderabad High Court. The High Court had disqualified him and directed the AP Assembly Speaker to recognise YSR Congress candidate M Thippe Swamy as the legislator.Thippe Swamy had filed a case in the High Court against Eeranna seeking his disqualification alleging that Eeranna had failed to disclose some facts about his family in his election affidavit. Thippe Swamy said that Eeranna had misled the Election Commission by suppressing some facts, including a case pending against him in Karnataka and his wife being a government employee.The court found Thippe Swamy’s charges genuine and gave a ruling in November disqualifying the TDP legislator. However, Eeranna appealed in the Supreme Court against the High Court’s ruling. The Supreme Court, in the last week, had upheld the High Court ruling and directed the legislator to quit. The SC also directed the AP Speaker to recognise Thippe Swamy as MLA from Madakasira Assembly.The YSR Congress candidate Thippe Swamy alleged that the TDP leader had misled the Election Commission by hiding the facts when he filed the nomination and affidavits at the time of 2014 election. He had collected the information and submitted to the court, which found Eeranna guilty.It might take some more time for the Assembly Speaker to recognise the YSR Congress candidate Thippe Swamy as legislator. His election now at the end of the present term of the Assembly will increase the YSR Congress strength in the Assembly to 66. The YSR Congress had won 67 MLAs in the last election. However, its strength came down to 44 with 23 MLAs defecting to the TDP. Two of them, Bhuma Nagi Reddy and Kidari Sarveswara Rao died bringing, bringing down the defectors strength to 22. While Bhuma Nagi Reddy’s place was filled in a by-election, Kidari Sarveswara Rao’s seat will remain vacant as there is no possibility of holding by-election at this point of time.
