HYDERABAD: A massive rise in the viewership of porn in the city has seen a consequent jump in problems creeping into conjugal life of couples. A medical study conducted in the city found the problem has its roots in psychological effects of porn addiction.Even as the Union government banned 827 porn sites in the country, porn viewership in the city has seen a 75% increase from 2017. A survey carried out by city doctors and published by DocOnline, an online consultation platform, also found out that an obsession for pornography is taking a toll on the sexual health of viewers, 78% of them male, aged from 18 to 50 years.“Porn often raises impractical sexual expectations in viewers. When this expectation is not met, frustration creeps in that results in numerous psycho-somatic disorders,” Dr Syed Abrar Kareem, a city physician, told TOI.Having quizzed around 5,000 patients suffering from sexual disorders, doctors said that 3,500 men and 1,500 women confessed to watching porn regularly. These porn lovers usually avail of online medical consultations to get rid of their disorders, which are dampening their conjugal lives and causing cases of depression. In fact, divorces or breaking up of relationships has also seen a rise by 31% in the city.“Excessive consumption of anything will have some adverse effect. Rising indulgence in virtual sex is affecting many young men and women to such an effect that temporary cases of impotency and failure to conceive are often being brought to us. School teachers should work as counsellors to keep adolescents away from the porn malady. The addiction starts with that age group,” Kareem added.Cyber experts are of the view that though the telecom services have blocked the porn sites, the tech-savvy generation easily finds alternative ways to access them. Porn sites also have come up with minor changes in their URLs, thus bypassing the ban.
