Members of the National Safai Karmachari Commission at the meeting on Tuesday A+ A- Hyderabad: National Safai Karmachari Commission on Tuesday warned the GHMC of initiating action against officials if remedial measures are not taken to rehabilitate scavengers, who relied on manual scavenging in the city of Hyderabad. About 353 people were identified in a survey on manual scavenging in Hyderabad. The commission asked the government to provide workers medical treatment, rehabilitation and better education for their children. He suggested providing employment to the families of 40 GHMC workers who died on duty. The details of those who had previously relied on manual scavenging were sent to the central government for providing compensation. Jagdish Hiremani, a member of the National Safai Karmachari Commission, said that the country’s priority is to introduce modern technology in the sanitation sector. A review meeting was held at the GHMC office on the implementation of the Manual Scavenging and Rehabilitation Act-2013 on Tuesday. Safai Karamcharis brought up issues like appointments on compassionate grounds and other benefits. The commission member asked them to submit specific data to the commissioner and asked the Commissioner to solve them at the earliest. GHMC Commissioner DS Lokesh Kumar, Additional and Zonal Commissioners and representatives of Safai Karmachari Societies participated in the meeting.
