Indore: Police on Thursday arrested an auto driver who had stabbed a passenger to death late on Wednesday after a scuffle over money.The deceased was identified as Subhash Mehta. Locals spotted him lie unconscious on road at Tori Corner square in Malharganj area and rushed him to hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.The entire incident was recorded in CCTV installed in the area following which police questioned a fruit seller and asked him about the incident.The fruit seller told police that an auto had stopped near his cart at night and the driver was wearing an orange colour t-shirt, whereas the passenger was in his early fifties and had a lean built. Both of them were drunk and were fighting with each other over the fare.Police raided several areas, including Jinsi Haat Maidan and Bada Ganapati, before they received a tip-off about the whereabouts of the accused. They arrested Uttam alias Goli, 33, a resident of Kadabin area.During questioning, he accepted to have committed the crime. He told police that Subhash Mehta was his father’s friend and they had consumed liquor at Imli Bazaar shop late on Wednesday. Subhash had then asked him to drop him at the fruit market at Tori corner. Even after promising to give him Rs 20, when Subhash refused and asked him to drop him home, he got angry.The verbal spat escalated to an extent that Subhash slapped the accused and was walking on the road when the accused took the sharp edged weapon used to cut fruits from the shop and stabbed the man several times. The accused then fled towards Loharpatti after committing the crime.“The accused was arrested and further investigation is on,” ASP crime branch Manish Khatri said.
