For cloning and tissue culture of Sagon trees, branches of trees that are fittest have been procured from Dewas district’s Sita Samadhi beat. As an experiment, team at Indore is developing clones of good quality Sagon trees and also Kadam and Paadar varieties. Indore: After successfully developing bamboo plants through tissue culture, forest department’s research and extension nursery at Khandwa road is now experimenting on developing rare and endangered trees (RET) species through tissue culture at their newly opened tissue culture lab. However, we are hopeful that Sagon trees will be successfully cloned,” Argal said. If conducted successfully, department will also use tissue culture method for cloning other RET species of trees, whose seeds are difficult to obtain from wild or are rare, endangered and threatened.

Indore: After successfully developing bamboo plants through tissue culture, forest department’s research and extension nursery at Khandwa road is now experimenting on developing rare and endangered trees (RET) species through tissue culture at their newly opened tissue culture lab. As an experiment, team at Indore is developing clones of good quality Sagon trees and also Kadam and Paadar varieties. For cloning and tissue culture of Sagon trees, branches of trees that are fittest have been procured from Dewas district’s Sita Samadhi beat. The trees which are tall, straight, have wide girth of stem and are healthy had been shortlisted by forest department earlier and the branches of these trees were chosen to be cloned through tissue culture. Similar process is adopted for Kadam and Paadar varieties whose branches are taken from healthy trees.“The branches are first sown on ground and watered. The buds that then grow on these branches are then taken and kept in culture. Here they are provided all necessary nutrients and after starting growth, they are taken to another centre for further multiplication,” CCF (research and extension) Manoj Argal said. The process was initiated by the team in February. Now, tree buds have been put in culture mediums for growth. Such an experiment is conducted for the first time in Madhya Pradesh. The tissue culture lab in Indore has successfully developed one lakh bamboo plants since 2007 and cloning of RET species is being done at experimental and research basis, without any fixed target.“The tissue culture technique of trees based on clumps has low success rate due to contamination. However, we are hopeful that Sagon trees will be successfully cloned,” Argal said. If conducted successfully, department will also use tissue culture method for cloning other RET species of trees, whose seeds are difficult to obtain from wild or are rare, endangered and threatened.
