Arunachal Pradesh: Revamped Tezu airport to be opened on September 24

GUWAHATI: Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, along with Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, will inaugurate the revamped Tezu airport on September 24. The newly developed infrastructure, built at a cost of Rs 170 crore, has an extension of the runway, a new apron, terminal building and a fire station-cum-ATC tower.Tezu, a small town located on the banks of the Lohit river, is the headquarters of Lohit district and is known for its scenic beauty with lush green forests and rolling hills all around. The revamped airport may be instrumental in increasing tourist footfall to the frontier state, officials said. The terminal building has an area of 4,000 sqm and the domestic airport is located in Tezu town and operates through a single runway. The airport has been developed on 212 acres of land, which is capable of handling operations for ATR 72-type aircraft.The AAI undertook the development and upgradation work to operationalize Tezu Airport at the request of the state government. The works undertaken for Rs 170 crore includes the extension of the runway (1500m x 30m) and the construction of a new apron for 02 nos. ATR 72-type aircraft, construction of a new terminal building and a fire station-cum-ATC tower, said a government release. The Tezu airport was operationalized in 2018 under the RCS UDAN scheme of the civil aviation ministry. Tezu is the fourth operational airport in Arunachal. The rest are in Hollongi (Itanagar), Pasighat and Zero.Tezu airport is currently connected to Dibrugarh, Imphal and Guwahati through regular scheduled flights by Alliance Air and Flybig airline. While the peak hour serving capacity at Tezu airport is 300 passengers, it will be able to handle more traffic after the expansion.The statement added that besides ensuring better connectivity to the NE region with the rest of the country, the revamped airport infrastructure will boost tourism, trade and employment generation besides promoting infrastructure development and economic growth of the region.
