Jaipur: To end stray cattle menace on city roads, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated a massive campaign with a target to catch nearly 10,000 stray bulls. In past four days, the JMC team has caught over 115 stray bulls, weighing approximately 500 kilogrammes. An official at JMC said, “The big bulls are major threat on city roads. Possibilities of fatal accidents increase when these animals fight on road or hit a motorist. Situation is expected to be normal once bulls are caught and kept in a captive area,” he said.In the recent past, the JMC has not shown keenness to take ox and bulls to state owned shelters due to less productivity and high maintenance. These males (ox and bulls) remain on roads after being abandoned and become cause for accidents. A source at JMC said the uneven sex ratio at the shelter has also become a major cause of worry for the operators.“The number of males (ox and bulls) abandoned by the villagers and residents has increased because of less productivity. Out of the nearly 22,000 cattle at Hingonia, there more than 8,500 males and 60% of the feed is provided to them,” he said.Sources said, “The JMC has not released payment of more than Rs 10 crore for maintaining Hingonia gaushala. Bringing more bulls will give additional financial pressure,” he added.Earlier, after witnessing continuous space crunch, 5,000 males have been shifted to nearly 4 hectares open area as it is difficult to accommodate them with other weak cattle. However, this land does not have sufficient shelter and cannot protect these from heat and extreme cold. Also, area is small for 5,000 males, this is the reason why JMC avoids to bring ox and bulls.“Now, 380 bighas of land adjoining gaushala have been reserved for bulls and ox,” added sources. To keep a check of stray cattle in city limits, the (JMC) has also asked the police commissioner to lodge a case against those who abandon their cattle in city limits. The JMC has observed that villagers from bordering areas abandon their old cattle inside the city as they damage their crops. This has led to the increase in stray cattle population in the city manifolds.
