Zika stings Jaipur as cases rise to 50

JAIPUR: With eight new Zika cases being reported on Saturday, total number of positive cases has gone up to 50, of whom 38 are doing fine, according to the health department Now since Zika cases are no longer confined to only Shastri Nagar in Jaipur, the health department along with Jaipur Municipal Corporation will go on door-todoor checking of houses in the city from Sunday. Meanwhile, the health department has sent 133 samples of urine and blood — 75 of fever patients and 58 of pregnant women — to Sawai Man Singh Medical College for testing. The department has conducted survey of 11,313 houses and found larvae at 2,282 homes. Students who needed to complete filling of examination forms were allowed to do so at the hostel. About 140 residents of the hostel have been confined to its premises.The health department claimed that people were not cleaning their water tanks, thereby providing breeding ground for mosquitoes in their houses.

Houseowners will be fined if larvae are found in their houses. On Saturday, as many as 276 teams were deployed for conducting survey of Zika-affected areas.The health department has issued directions for taking disciplinary action against officials who are not doing their duties properly.On Saturday, additional chief secretary (health) Veenu Gupta inspected Zika-affected Shastri Nagar and visited Heerabagh nurses’ training centre, where a facility for isolating patients infected with Zika virus has been set up.A health department official said that with the help of the district collector and administration of Rajput Hostel in the city’s Sindhi Camp area, where four Zika-positive cases have been reported, facilities for food and filling of examination forms have been put in place. Students who needed to complete filling of examination forms were allowed to do so at the hostel.
