Defer local bodies' bypolls: District collectors urge Chief Secretary of Jaipur

The collectors writing to the chief secretary instead of the state election commission, has also raised eye brows.However, according to sources, it is not likely to happen as according to the 73rd amendment, election to the local bodies and panchayats cannot be intervened into, even by courts, once the election process has been set in motion.Sources maintained that the bypolls to the panchayat samitis and zila parishad would be held as per schedule. JAIPUR: The district collectors have written to the chief secretary D B Gupta seeking postponement of the bypoll to members of 11 panchayat samitis and a zila parishad to be held on October 27, claiming that the officials are too busy with the preparation for the assembly polls.The commission had already initiated the poll process with notification issued on October 12 and nominations had begun on October 15. The state government had declared a holiday on the polling day, when the bypolls are being held and announced dry day from October 25 to 27 and on the counting day on October 29.The bypolls announced are to members of the Alwar zila parishad, panchayat samitis of Mandalgarh, Sujangarh and Bidasar in Churu, Lawan in Dausa, Alsisar in Jhunjhunu, Nadoti in Karouli, Ladpura in Kota, Merta in Nagaur, Jaitaran in Pali, Piprali in Sikar and Badi in Dholpur districts.The state election commission officials said they have received the letter from the chief secretary asking to postpone the bypolls to after the assembly elections.A separate state election commission is entrusted with the task of holding local bodies' and panchayat elections.
