A thought-provoking play titled Agnipariksha, depicting four narratives of agnipariksha of women which are everlasting examples of women’s persecution in ancient as well as modern times, was staged as part of the ongoing theatre festival Rajrangam Rang Mahotsav at Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur.The four narratives are Sati’s self-immolation, Sita’s ‘agnipariksha’, Rani Padmini’s ‘Johar’ and widowed daughter-in-laws being charred to death in the name of the Sati tradition. The play was staged in Jaipur’s ancient Lok Natya Tamasha form and produced by Sakriya Natya Samiti.Dilip Bhatt, director of the play shared, "Man, even today, does not leave any opportunity to strip a woman. The woman goes through this abuse all the time and in different ways, and if she complains her voice is muffled. Women continue to face agnipariksha even today. It’s high time that people change their mindset towards women and stop looking at them as a property or an item to use. We have done more than 100 shows of this play globally including England in 2010.”
