Smartphones for visually impaired soon

Jaipur: Rajasthan will become second state is the country to distribute smartphones to specially abled persons. These smartphones are specially designed for blind and those suffering from low vision. The social justice and welfare department (Rajastan) will bear Rs 10,000 while Rs 2,000 will be paid by the Central government. "It will help user to navigate the phone by listening to the buttons he/she pressing" said Rath. The cost of these phones is Rs 12,000.

The cost of these phones is Rs 12,000. The social justice and welfare department (Rajastan) will bear Rs 10,000 while Rs 2,000 will be paid by the Central government. The move is intended to bring ease in day-to-day life through technological interventions.Himachal Pradesh is the first state to have distributed these phones to 2,000 specially-abled persons. Rajasthan has a total blind population of 35,000 on the basis of certificate issued by the medical board. The special phones have been designed by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), a PSU unit under the ministry of social justice and welfare.S K Rath, officer at research and development, ALIMCO, said, "Rajasthan has asked for 1000 special phones. These phones will be like a companion to the user as it is beyond calling and surfing. The phone is android based with tailor made features for blind users." Four main features of these phones—Talkback, screen reader, magnifier and accessibility feature.Feature uses spoken words on the phone allow the user to know the pressed button. "It will help user to navigate the phone by listening to the buttons he/she pressing" said Rath. The Screen Reader feature is a boon for students and those who like to read but they didn't due to the poor vision. The feature on the active mode will read out files and content in languages which are in sync with the Google," said Rath.Talking about the importance of magnifier, Rath says that this feature is for those with poor vision. The magnifier enlarges the image or content on the system making the function or the device visible. "It is initially for a small section of beneficiaries which later will be expanded based on the priority level," said the director of Commissionairate Specially Abled persons, Anupama Jorwal.
