KOLKATA: Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah called on Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Friday so that the opposition’s federal front against BJP can be made a reality. He, however, remained mum on a PM candidate, saying it will be considered after the Lok Sabha polls.Standing beside Banerjee, whose name as a probable PM candidate is already doing the rounds, Abdullah said: “The poll dates have not yet been decided, so how can we think of the PM candidate now? Our priority is to put up a united face against BJP. We are banking on all regional parties who are against BJP and have a strong base in their respective states to forge federal front unity.”He suggested that regional parties focus on the issue of fear among the minority community to forge a bond against BJP.Abdullah, however, said he was not sure if the formula put forth by Banerjee for a one-on-one fight against BJP could happen through alliance among federal front partners, as they were only interested in post-poll alliance and pre-poll seat adjustment was not on the cards. Abdullah said that his party, National Conference, had no differences with TMC and they could easily cooperate.Abdullah also appreciated the good work done by the Bengal government. “Mamata didi is putting Bengal ahead and when it is time, we will use her good work for the development of the nation,” he said. He also praised Banerjee for her concern for the people of J&K and said they also discussed developing Kashmir’s tourism.Abdullah said it was too early to speak on the results of Pakistan polls. He said there is tension in the border and along the LoC for the past few years and slammed the BJP government for its failure in diplomatic strategy. He said “what Imran Khan has said sounds good”, but felt it was too early to speculate as the new PM should be given a breathing period.Banerjee also took a dig at the Centre when she said that BJP was in favour of dictatorial rule and it was its strategy to rule through presidential rule. She urged the opposition to make sacrifices for the sake of the country.
