Police collect school van driver’s statement

The police team probing the accident involving a school van in Maradu last week, collected the statement of Anil Kumar, the driver of the vehicle, here on Monday. The police have already booked a case against the van driver under IPC 304 A for causing death by negligence. “The statement of Anil Kumar, the lone major survivor of the accident, is crucial in ascertaining how the accident actually happened. The collection of his statements, however, had to be suspended about ten minutes into the session as Anil Kumar, who had sustained internal injuries in the accident, developed uneasiness. “Though an accused in the case, he is the only person inside the vehicle who can explain what happened.

Officials said the driver, the lone accused in the case, appeared before Circle Inspector Nisamuddin of Thripunithura traffic station, based on a summons served to him four days ago. The collection of his statements, however, had to be suspended about ten minutes into the session as Anil Kumar, who had sustained internal injuries in the accident, developed uneasiness. “The statement of Anil Kumar, the lone major survivor of the accident, is crucial in ascertaining how the accident actually happened. He is currently admitted to a hospital and will be summoned for interrogation once again upon being discharged from there,” the circle inspector said. Earlier in the morning, the police team had held a brief interaction with him, following which, they asked him to appear for interrogation in the afternoon. According to the police, a huge volume of mud had entered his ears and nostrils during the accident, causing serious health problems. The police have already booked a case against the van driver under IPC 304 A for causing death by negligence. “Though an accused in the case, he is the only person inside the vehicle who can explain what happened. The other witnesses are all children in the age group of three to five years,” said officers.
