Protest rages against bishop Franco

THRISSUR: The protest against bishop Franco Mulakkal, who is facing allegations of raping a nun , has spread to Thrissur In a symbolic protest held in front of the corporation office on Friday, a social activist dressed up as bishop Franco, was beaten with brooms, by other activists. Parvathi Pavanan, K Venu, K Aravindakashan, I Shanmughadas, Gopikrishnan, and others participated in the programme. Sreedharan Therambil, the activist who acted as the bishop, was later arrested by the police.Meanwhile, the students and teachers of the Calicut University’s School of Drama staged another street play in the city.The play tried to bring out the various forms of atrocities unleashed by the powerful institutions against women and other marginalized sections.The play was performed by about 35 students and teachers of the School of Drama. The performance drew the participation of large number of people as it proceeded from Vadakke Stand area and circled through the Swaraj Round, occupying the whole road stretch.The programme expressed solidarity with the agitation of the nuns in Kochi demanding the arrest of Franco.A host of organizations jointly arranged a cultural meeting to express solidarity with the protesting nuns at the Thekke Gopura Nada in the afternoon.
