Port invites land lease bids for cold chain hub

Kochi port is among the ports that have recorded higher than average growth while nine of the major ports showed positive growth. Cochin Port Trust has invited bids for leasing 2.6 hectares in the Puthuvype Special Economic Zone for a cold chain hub (cryogenic warehousing facility) for a period of 30 years, taking forward a major project for the port and the State. The process will be used for creation of a zero carbon dioxide emission cold chain hub.

The cryogenic warehousing facility is among the 23 major Sagar Mala projects drawn up by the Shipping Ministry for the State. The Port Trust has earmarked the area on Puthuvype Island close to the LNG terminal for cryogenic warehousing using the cold energy available from the regassification process at the five million tonnes-a-year LNG terminal. The process will be used for creation of a zero carbon dioxide emission cold chain hub. A post on the Port Trust website said that the Union government would provide support for the project. Meanwhile, major ports in India recorded an average growth of 5.13% to together handle 288.38 million tonnes of cargo during the April—August period. During the same period last year, these ports handled a total of 274.32 million tonnes. Kochi port is among the ports that have recorded higher than average growth while nine of the major ports showed positive growth. A statement from the Press Information Bureau said that the highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (17.24%); it was followed by Deendayal Port (11.16%), Paradip (10.93%), Kochi (10.13%) and Kolkata (9.01%). Across the major ports, petroleum products formed the largest share of cargo throughput at a little over 33%; it was followed by containerised cargo (20.83%), thermal and steam coal (15.36%); coking and other coal (7.74%).
