KOCHI: The activities as run up to Navy Day celebrations, observed on December 4, will begin from this month.The Navy Day is celebrated to commemorate the audacious attack on Pakistani naval base in Karachi during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. The theme of the Navy week this time is ‘Indian Navy-Mission Deployed and Combat Ready’.Another significant fact is that INS Venduruthy, home to the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command, celebrated its 75th anniversary on 22 June 2018. The naval base was named after a small island which was originally part of Kochi backwaters and was later reclaimed during the creation of the Kochi port.As a precursor to the Navy Week Celebrations 2018, goodwill services would be carried out in Don Bosco ‘Sneha Bhavan, Thoppumpady, Vatsalya Bhavan-Home for Girls, Ponnurunny, Home for the Physically Challenged Women, Thevara , Prathyasha Orphanage, Palluruthy and Sree Poornthrayeesha Balasramam at Tripunithura over five days between October 15- 26. Community service would also be carried out at Good Hope Old Age Home at Fort Kochi This year, the Naval operations demonstration (Op Demo) will be conducted at the waterfront of Rajendra Maidan/ Subhash Park on Sunday, December 2 from 4:30- 6:30pm. The aim of the Op Demo is to display naval capabilities to the general populace. Full-dress rehearsal for the operation would be held on December 1.The Subhash Park would be open for the general public while entry to Rajendra Maidan would be on invitation.
