NEW DELHI: Professor Bidyut Chakrabarty has taken charge as the new vice-chancellor of Visva Bharati University.Chakrabarty was appointed as VC by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 8, 2018. The university founded by Rabindranath Tagore has the Prime Minister as its chancellor and enjoys a good reputation. The university has been in turmoil in the recent past and the post of VC had been lying vacant for nearly two and half years. He has a PhD from the London School of Economics and specialises in public administration.The Visva Bharati University has not had a full time VC since February 2016 after Sushanta Duttagupta was removed from office during Smriti Irani 's reign as HRD minister. The selection process itself was marred with controversy with the President having to withdraw the first appointment earlier this year.Chakrabarty is from the department of political science in Delhi University, where he has been teaching since 1998.
