LDF banks on pro-women stand

“From day one, the government is using the SC order to destroy temples and rituals. “The stand taken on Wednesday is only a continuation of that strategy. “The chief minister and the party secretary have repeated that government was duty-bound to implement the SC order. Their original argument was against allowing young women. When SC issued the order, TDB president wanted to file a review petition.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: By vehemently opposing the review petitions against the woman entry order in Supreme Court on Wednesday, state government reasserted its position, giving a clear hint that second wave of ‘renaissance’ will be a major poll plank in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election The government could also ensure the support of Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) this time though TDB had argued for the affidavit filed by the previous board (headed by Congress leader Prayar Gopalakrishnan) when the final arguments of the case were heard last year. Counsels of government and TDB took a stand that there need not be any review of the SC order dated September 28, 2018.The argument of TDB’s advocate Rakesh Dwivedi focussed more on implementing the SC verdict than pressing for its main prayer seeking time to implement the order. By saying that TDB supported the stand of SC’s Constitution bench and arguing that preventing young women won’t fall under essential religious practice, TDB made it clear that it had no differences with the government. This in turn led to a strong reaction from the opposition Congress and BJP. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said TDB has always taken a stand to fool believers. “The stand taken on Wednesday is only a continuation of that strategy. Their original argument was against allowing young women. When SC issued the order, TDB president wanted to file a review petition. But, CM threatened him to change the stand. Then they said they would file a petition seeking more time. Now, they are supporting women entry,” he said.BJP state president PS Sreedharan Pillai alleged that the government and TDB joined hands to deceive believers. “From day one, the government is using the SC order to destroy temples and rituals. The stand of government and TDB has underlined our arguments. People of Kerala will settle scores with this government for hurting their belief,” he said.CPM sources said there was no confusion within the party on the issue. “The chief minister and the party secretary have repeated that government was duty-bound to implement the SC order. Even in 2007, CPM had taken the same stand. It is not our party but others who have constantly changed their stand,” said a senior CPM leader. The party, which has already taken on NSS, plans to raise ‘renaissance’ as a major poll plank. The two campaign rallies (to be led by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and Kanam Rajendran next week) will focus on Sabarimala . To further the cause, the government expanded ‘renaissance’ value protection council by adding Muslim and Christian leaders. The renaissance value protection council will be the key tool for CPM’s new social engineering experiment which attempts to group majority of Hindus along with minorities and thus generate winning numbers in majority of constituencies.
