Authorities may ferry containers on train, ships

KOCHI: As the strike of trailer truck operators continues, Cochin Port Trust (CPT) and DP World, the operator of International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT), have almost decided to move containers through railroad and coastal shipping routes.Owners of trailer trucks are protesting against imposing toll at Ponnarimangalam toll plaza by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).“We had a meeting with stakeholders, including India Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (IGTPL) and we are almost finalizing the movement of containers by rail as well as the coastal route. Containers bound for Kozhikode and other areas in Kerala will move through the coastal route. We are in advanced talk with Container Corporation of India (Concor) and will be moving containers bound for Coimbatore, Pollachi and Salem through the railroad,” said CPT chairman in-charge A V Ramana.On Thursday, CPT will hold another discussion with stakeholders in which customs officials will also be present.“We have talked to chief commissioner of customs and he has promised all the help,” Ramana said.Meanwhile, sources close to the DP World-operated IGTPL also confirmed the move to depend on coastal ships and railways. Southern Railway is keen about increasing traffic movements to ICTT through the Vallarpadam rail link.Officials with the railway said that talks have been taking place between railway and other stakeholders in this regard.“DP World finds the tariff fixed by railway as excessive. s operate at lesser rates.
